Histrorical Context Of Shakespeares "Hamlet"
Hamlet was written in the mid 1590's and the taste then was "the bloodier the better." (jiffynotes) Also the trend in Elizabethan England was stories about revenge. this had an influence on hamlet because this story was written in elizabethan england and is about revenge and a lot of tragedies9jiffynotes). but by the end of the century the people didnt want as much blood, they wanted domething new. The story hamlet id very closely related to the plot of Amleth wich showed in 1514(jiffynotes).
In elizabethan england, this was the time for writers to break out, and with all of the well respected plays they had a chance to get inspired and make their own version. this was good for shakespeare because he had based hs off of a much older play(jiffynotes). people were familiar with the play and took a liking to his. Also elizabethan england had a unique style. people would write about very violent and sometimes gruesome things because this was what everyone wanted to read.
in hamlet. prince hamlet is devastated by his fathers death. He is in a relationship with ophelia. hamlet sees the ghost of his fatjer and is aked to get revenge on his uncle. hamlet didnt know why until the ghost told him that his uncle, claudius who is the deceased kings brother, had murdered king hamlet. claudius had married hamlets mother , gurtrude, for one reason, to become king. one night he is talking to his mother, and finds someone spying on them, and stabs through the curtain. he is upset to find that he had just killed ophelias father, who works for te king. ophelia finds out thatg hamlet killed her father and she soon dies. she drowned in a river. hamlet soon finds out he has not carried through with his revenge and begins to create a plot to do so. there is a duel between leartes, who is ophelias brother, and prince hamlet. they both end up dying. the queen accidentally drinks poison, and claudius is stabbed. prince fortinbras , prince of norway ends up king of denmark.
the comparison between hamlet and the elizabethan era is very much the same. shakespeare decided to write this to get people interested and they were. this type of story was very popular at the time and quickly shakespeare became the new style.
